Q&A Interview with Hailey Gibson

What is your hobby? Playing instruments. Mainly bassoon.

What are all the instruments you play? Bassoon, Saxophone, Ukulele, and I am learning how to play guitar.

What equipment do you need to play the bassoon? I need my bassoon obviously, a cup for water, reeds, and my music binder. I have to make sure i have this every day for class.

How much does this cost yearly for you? Around 500 dollars. This does not include the spring trip fee. The band takes us on a trip every year, and every other year is an out of state trip. Next year is supposed to go to Disney World.

How did you get started? I was in 6th grade when i first started. I walked in during orientation and the band directer at griffin had me try playing on a bassoon and I was able to play it, so I decided to try it out. I ended up loving it.

How long have you done this? This is my 4th year on bassoon, my first on saxophone, and my second year on Ukulele.

Have you won anything playing bassoon? I have gotten Superiors on all of my solos, and I made it into freshman region band this year.

How long do you practice during the week? Outside of school, normally an hour or two. It really depends on if I have a competition or UIL coming up. I tend to practice more then.

Do you own your own bassoon? No, I do not, because they can range anywhere from 9,000 to 35,000 dollars.

Why do you find satisfaction in this? I am not in any sports except Marching band during the first season. Band and playing instruments is what occupies my time. I am surrounded by like minded people and my friends. It normally keeps me occupied and can get my mind off of personal life if needed.
